So I read of all these skeptic events around the world and think how I’d love to get to one (some) one day. I was invited on Facebook to one in Nashville, TN yesterday and seeing a couple of the people who had RSVP’d am pretty sure I’d enjoy going. If only it wasn’t on the other side of the world.
Then, the other week I was listening to the Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe, one of the many podcasts I subscribe and listen to regularly. Rebecca said something about having an announcement and my first thought was ‘imagine if she was coming to Melbourne’ with the added thought that of course that would be highly unlikely. Well, turns out I was wrong because that’s exactly what she did announce! Rebecca Watson is coming to Melbourne for the 2012 Skeptics Convention. The thought of that is pretty exciting I must say.
The obvious two problems that came to mind initially were the cost and whether I would be able to be away from my child for the weekend. So, as it turns out, it’s a Dad weekend for the kid so I am free, or so I thought at first. The cost was another matter and although I balked when I realised how much it would cost, I am pretty sure that one way or another I would have pulled the cash together. I mean, how often does Rebecca Watson come to Melbourne? And while it’s expensive, it’s sure beats trying to fly over to the US!
The next day though I realised something else. My job is a pretty much 9 to 5 kind of job, which works out well between school and after school care. It’s just that there is one weekend each year that I have to work. It’s not negotiable. It’s the kind of thing that if I didn’t do it, I could fairly well kiss my job goodbye. So guess which weekend it is? Yep, it’s the weekend of the Skeptics convention. Bummer, hey?
